Wednesday, the supernatural mystery series starring Jenna Ortega, has confirmed the release date for its highly-anticipated second season.
The Netflix series, a spin-off of The Addams Family, follows Wednesday Addams (Ortega) as she transfers to Nevermore Academy, a school for “monstrous outcasts” in a town of deadly secrets.
Following the record-breaking success of the show’s first season in 2022, which saw it become one of the streamer’s most viewed series, anticipation for the follow-up has been sky-high, with production getting underway last year.
Now, after a long wait, fans can rest easy after Netflix confirmed that Wednesday would return with four episodes on 6 August. The second part of the season, consisting of another four instalments, will premiere on 3 September.
The announcement comes complete with a range of new photos from the second season, with returning stars such as Ortega, Luis Guzman, Joy Sunday, Emma Myers and Catherine Zeta Jones all being shown in character.
There is also an image of guest star Joanna Lumley as Grandmama, though other new cast members such as Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Thandiwe Newton and Lady Gaga are absent from the shots.
“Wednesday Addams returns to prowl the Gothic halls of Nevermore Academy, where fresh foes and woes await,” reads the logline. “This season, Wednesday must navigate family, friends and old adversaries, propelling her into another year of delightfully dark and kooky mayhem.”
The synopsis also teases that Wednesday, who is “armed with her signature razor-sharp wit and deadpan charm”, will be “plunged” into a “new bone-chilling supernatural mystery” – just what secrets lie in the town of Jericho?
Ortega, who also serves as an executive producer on the show, previously teased elements of the second season, sharing that a slasher-themed episode was a highlight from the upcoming batch of episodes.
“Visually, I can say we have some of the most fun we’ve ever had,” she said. “It’s crazy to talk about one frame like this, but there is a frame of Pugsley rolling his eyes back with this contraption around his head – that’s all I can say – and it reminds me so much of Full Metal Jacket. It’s insane. So bizarre.
“I just feel like there are a lot of scenes and frames, and there’s a whole episode based off of slashers, and we make a lot of horror references. So, everything about it, I feel like we kind of had a little bit more trust, and therefore, we felt like we could do bigger, more elaborate sequences, which is nice.”
