RIVERDALE was unable to finish season 4 before the world went into lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. So when will the teen drama return to filming?
Riverdale shocked fans with a season four storyline where it was believed Jughead Jones (played by Cole Sprouse) had been murdered. Thankfully, this wasn’t the case and the Netflix series moved onto its next mystery. However, Riverdale wasn’t able to finish the plot as the show was forced to stop filming.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Riverdale.
As Jughead returned from the “dead”, there was another investigation underway but this time it was Riverdale’s resident writer teaming up with girlfriend Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and their half-brother FBI Agent Charles Smith (Wyatt Nash).
Videotapes were being sent to everyone’s homes in the town, containing hours of footage of outside their homes.
Another round of tapes were then sent but this time the camera was a lot closer.
Soon enough, whoever was making the tapes started making videos recreating some of the show’s biggest storylines.
The first videotape was a reenactment of Jughead being hit over the head by Betty in the woods.
Next up was Cheryl Blossom who fell victim as she was sent a video of people recreating the moment where her twin brother Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines) was murdered by their father Clifford Blossom (Barclay Hope).
In the season four finale, a third tape was of a group of teens – dressed up to look like the Riverdale High gang – attacking a man presumed to be Mr Honey (Kerr Smith).
But while the others were clearly faked, it is unclear whether this man was really in danger.
Could the teens’ fantasy of murdering Mr Honey have actually been brought to life?
When will Riverdale return to filming for series 5?
Riverdale was unable to finish shooting the entirety of season four due to the pandemic.
Since then, The CW has revealed the teen drama will return sometime in January 2021.
So far, an official release date has not yet been revealed as this will be determined by when the show can get back to filming.
As of writing this article, filming has not yet continued for the next season.
There has been no confirmation as to when Riverdale will get back on set to film the first few episodes originally intended for series four as well as the rest of season five.
Riverdale is filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, so the decision will be primarily led by the Canadian Government.
The restrictions imposed back in March have eased up in recent weeks in Canada giving hope that the show could soon return to filming.
However, in mid-July it was reported there had been a small spike in the number of cases in the country.
Reuters reported how the daily case count had gone up from 300 earlier in July to 350 by the end with more than 430 cases reported on Thursday, July 16.
Deputy chief public health officer Howard Njoo said: “When we examine recent trends in case reporting, there is some cause for concern.
“After a period of steady decline, daily case counts have started to rise.
“This coincides with increasing reports of individuals contracting COVID-19 at parties, nightclubs and bars as well as increasing rates of transmission among young Canadians.”
So while the number of cases is lower in Canada than places such as the US, there is bound to be some caution taken when talking about going back to filming.
If there is too much of a delay though, this could in turn further push back the season five release date.
