Vampire Diaries spin-off Legacies has finally revealed what happened to Sheriff Matt Donovan.
First introduced as Elena Gilbert’s ex-boyfriend in the original series, Matt (Zach Roerig) later became the Sheriff of Mystic Falls, and he made a guest appearance in the first season of Legacies.
He only appeared in two episodes though, and come season two the town had appointed a new boss in the form of Sheriff Mac, whose name is a nod to Sheriff Forbes actor Marguerite MacIntyre.
Viewers were never really told why Matt stepped down from the position – or where he went, in fact – but now the show has confirmed in the most subtle way possible that Matt actually went on to fulfil his dream of becoming Mystic Falls Mayor.
His new job title was made clear in the supernatural show’s most recent episode, ‘That’s Nothing I had to Remember’, when Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis) flashed Matt’s new business card to Sheriff Mac during questioning.
Later, Mac told Alaric that “Mayor Donovan” had corroborated his alibi.

While it seems like OG character Matt isn’t going to be making a return to Mystic Falls and the fang-filled franchise anytime soon, Legacies has just welcomed back The Originals star Riley Voelkel, who played Freya Mikaelson.
Legacies will also be bringing back Vampire Diaries favourite Chris Wood as Kai Parker next year, while Ian Somerhalder – who famously played Damon Salvatore in the hit teen drama – recently said he’d be interested in returning, too.
Just not as an actor, this time.
“I actually would love to talk to [creator] Jules [Plec]. I would love to go and direct one of [the Legacies episodes],” he told Cinema Blend. “Because I know Paul [Wesley] went to do it and he called me and he’s like, ‘Bro, this is f**king crazy’.
“It’s all of our old sets, which is a time warp, 10 years ago. He’s just going, ‘Dude!’ He was actually kind of emotional about it, he goes ‘This is crazy!'”
